It gives farmers an earlier warning of rice blast disease. Rice blast threatens rice production worldwide, spreading through plants before symptoms show. REDAlert turns the fungus’s own hiding mechanism against it. Our genetic circuit detects MoChia1, a protein the fungus uses to evade the plant’s immune system, and converts that detection into a visible red pigment. Rice plants can now signal infection before symptoms appear. That gives farmers time to protect their harvests and shift rice blast management from reaction to prevention.
