<description>Title: rePhlow | Engineering the Future of Phosphorus Recovery Description: Phosphorus is essential to life, yet its accumulation in wastewater threatens aquatic ecosystems while its finite reserves face increasing global pressure. rePhlow, developed by iGEM Madrid-UCM 2026, aims to transform this environmental challenge into an opportunity for circular resource recovery. By integrating synthetic biology, enzyme immobilisation and bioprocess engineering, we are developing a modular wastewater treatment system that combines genetically engineered Pseudomonas putida, immobilised phosphohydrolases and protective alginate core-shell capsules to capture phosphorus and store it as recoverable polyphosphate. Our approach goes beyond pollutant removal, exploring the conversion of recovered phosphorus into valuable compounds through ATP regeneration and biocatalysis. Guided by industrial collaboration, sustainability assessments and an entrepreneurial vision, rePhlow seeks to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world implementation, paving the way for a more circular and resource-efficient industry.
