<description>Title: FishFriend Description: Bacterial fish diseases are a major challenge to the sustainable development of aquaculture, causing significant economic losses worldwide. Conventional control strategies rely heavily on antibiotics, which contribute to antimicrobial resistance, environmental contamination, and drug residues in aquatic products. To address these issues, our project employs synthetic biology to engineer Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a microbial cell factory for the biosynthesis of 1,8-cineole, a naturally occurring monoterpene with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. The produced 1,8-cineole is expected to inhibit or eliminate pathogenic bacteria responsible for bacterial fish diseases, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional antibiotics. As a biodegradable natural compound with low toxicity to humans and minimal environmental impact, 1,8-cineole offers significant advantages in terms of biosafety and sustainability. By combining renewable microbial production with natural antimicrobial compounds, our approach aims to reduce antibiotic dependence while promoting healthier aquaculture practices.
