Title: DermaSense: A living, air pollution-responsive moisturiser Description: Delhi’s annual PM2.5 has hovered near 100 µg/m³ since 2021, about twenty times the WHO guideline. Particulates and ozone drive reactive oxygen species that harm the skin. Conventional moisturisers use one fixed dose. DermaSense is a living alternative. We are engineering Staphylococcus epidermidis, a skin-commensal, so that a redox-sensitive regulator opens a synthetic operon under oxidative stress. The operon makes pulcherrimin, an antioxidant that also absorbs UV, together with xylolipid and lyso-ornithine lipid, biosurfactants that emulsify and hydrate at the barrier. We established proof of concept for lyso-ornithine lipid biosynthesis in E. coli, paving the way for its potential integration into a skin-associated microbial chassis. Our software integrates live air-quality data across the globe to estimate pollution-induced damage and potential protection offered by these molecules. Our vision is skincare that no longer sits on the skin but lives within it: responsive, self-regulating, and sustained by microbiome itself. Wiki | Official Page
