<description>Title: KeraTINT: The colorful cure to hair damage Description: Most hair dyes are harmful for both hair and skin. These toxic chemicals are environmentally damaging and include oxidative chemicals that remove the hair’s cuticle layer. KeraTINT is a safer, environmentally friendly hair dye that both dye and repair hair. KeraTINT uses highly specific keratin-binding peptides (KBP) fused to chromoproteins and expresses the fusion in bacteria. While other hair dyes harm hair structure, KeraTINT actually restores damaged hair because the KBP penetrates into the hair structure, binds keratin, and repairs the damaged inner layers. To provide a wide range of colors, Escherichia coli were engineered to produce various colors, such as blue (aeblue and amilCP chromoproteins), pink (anm2CP), magenta (mScarlet-i), red (mkate), yellow (amilGFP), and green (sfgfp). The proteins were successfully expressed and purified and can be used to treat hair samples. We developed unique assays to test our dye and its ability to color a range of hair types.
