<description>Title: ReLeaf: Synthetic Biology-Driven Conversion of Garden And Agricultural Waste into Bioethanol Description: Every year, large amounts of garden and agricultural waste are discarded through incineration and landfilling, contributing to pollution and resource loss. ReLeaf, developed by WLSA-ShanghaiAcademy for iGEM 2026, explores a sustainable alternative: converting lignocellulosic biomass into ethanol through synthetic biology. Our wet lab project employs five complementary enzymes to break down lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, releasing fermentable sugars. We then investigate dual-yeast fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae for glucose and Scheffersomyces stipitis for xylose utilization. To support process monitoring, we also develop a low-cost, solar-powered fermentation system for continuous sensing and temperature control. Meanwhile, stakeholder interviews, expert consultations, and science outreach help shape our design around real-world needs. By integrating biological conversion, hardware engineering, and Human Practices, ReLeaf aims to advance a practical approach to transforming plant waste into renewable energy.
