<description>Title: Algaeneering Description: Micronutrient deficiencies affect billions worldwide. Our project aimed to establish a proof of concept for vitamin overproduction in microalgae by engineering Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to increase vitamin C and folate production through overexpression of bottleneck enzymes in the respective native pathways. Through expert and stakeholder interviews, we continuously questioned and refined our approach, considering ethical, societal, and practical challenges. This also strengthened our focus on education and public engagement, aiming to make topics such as micronutrient deficiencies, microalgae, and genetic engineering accessible to people of all ages. Computational models complemented our laboratory work by exploring biological processes relevant to vitamin production. Experimentally, we confirmed reporter expression and obtained promising preliminary results for transformation with our vitamin C construct, while transformation of the folate constructs remains unconfirmed. Although further research is needed, Algaeneering provides a starting point for developing vitamin-enriched microalgae while combining scientific research with responsible development and public engagement.
