Title: REDAlert: Rice Blast Early Detection Alert Description: REDAlert is a synthetic biology project from the Georgia State University iGEM 2026 team that aims to give rice farmers an early, visible warning of rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, before the damage can no longer be treated. We engineered a three-part genetic circuit that detects MoChia1, a protein the fungus secretes, relays the signal through a split-TEV protease system, and produces a red RUBY pigment that can be seen by eye with no lab equipment. In this video, we explain why rice blast is so hard to catch in time, and we walk through what 14 stakeholders across four groups (farmers, researchers, regulators and industry, and ethicists) told us and how their feedback changed our design. We then cover our circuit design, the computational modeling we used to test it before the wet lab, and our work in rice protoplasts, including early results, along with our education and outreach. REDAlert is an early detection indicator, not a treatment or protection against rice blast. Our experiments are ongoing and our results are preliminary. Full documentation is available on our team wiki. Wiki | Official Page
