Title: ASTACi: A novel approach for the monitoring and treatment of the Crayfish Plague Description: Native European crayfish are threatened by crayfish plague, a lethal disease spread by invasive North American crayfish. To help address this problem, we developed a synthetic biology strategy to detect the pathogen (Aphanomyces astaci), disarm the carrier, and defend the crayfish. We established a portable LAMP-based diagnostic test for field detection of A. astaci, engineered RNAi tools to target resistance mechanisms in invasive crayfish, and produced protective proteins for native species. Together, our work provides a foundation for innovative approaches to monitor and combat crayfish plague while supporting native crayfish conservation. Wiki | Official Page
