<description>Title: SCENTINEL Description: Vineyards face a silent enemy: powdery mildew. When symptoms appear, it is already too late, leading growers to spray entire fields indiscriminately. SCENTINEL offers a new approach for decoding the invisible language of plants. Using Odorant-Binding Proteins (OBPs) inspired by insects and produced in E. coli, our team from Universitat Rovira i Virgili is developing a biosensor to detect Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released as early stress signals. Combined with electrical detection, SCENTINEL aims to translate these communications into real-time alerts sent straight to a grower’s phone; allowing precise, localized treatment while minimizing chemical use and protecting our planet.
