Title: Designed to Be Lost Description: Twice a day, at the same minute, from about a thousand points on Earth, someone fills a balloon and lets go of a small foam box. It climbs for two hours, reports the weather that every forecast is built on, and then falls into the sea. Nobody plans to retrieve it. That is not a mistake in the design — it is a line in the design. Which leaves exactly one decision: what the box is made of. BioSonde engineers a salt-loving bacterium to turn waste PET bottles into a radiosonde shell the ocean can finish on its own. Waste PET is cut by an enzyme into ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. The glycol feeds Halomonas LA5, a halophile whose fermenter needs no sterilising and whose cells burst in plain water, so the polymer is recovered without solvent. Carbon dioxide then foams that polymer into a thirty-gram shell. Wiki | Official Page
