Title: SHELLter: Using Shellfish Waste to Protect Our Waterways from Chemotherapy Pollution Description: Breaking news: two environmental problems, one solution. Join the iGEM Evening News as our experts report on cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug that reaches our rivers through untreated hospital wastewater, and on the millions of tonnes of shellfish waste discarded every year. The UCL iGEM 2026 team then takes over the broadcast to present SHELLter. We show how we produced enzymes in E. coli, including a novel fusion enzyme, that turn chitin from shellfish waste into platinum-binding chito-oligosaccharides. Our hardware then uses these in a cartridge that captures cisplatin from patients’ urine at the point of excretion. Along the way, we take you through our wet lab results, kinetic modelling, docking simulations, and a life cycle and techno-economic analysis that asks whether SHELLter is truly worth doing. Finally, discover what we learned from patients, clinicians and industry experts, and how we brought synthetic biology to audiences far beyond the lab. Wiki | Official Page
