Title: AeroSense: A Fruit-Fly-Inspired Living-Cell Odor Sensing Platform Description: AeroSense (NTHU iGEM 2026) is a modular odor-sensing platform inspired by fruit-fly olfaction. We expressed fruit-fly odorant receptors with Orco in HEK293 cells and used the calcium indicator GCaMP6f to record odor-associated fluorescence. Odors across different receptor conditions produced distinct response patterns. To read these weak signals outside a plate reader, we built an open, low-cost four-channel reader with frequency-modulated LED excitation and lock-in signal extraction. We tested it with fluorescein standards and a living-cell trial, and documented it so others can rebuild it. A fruit-fly-inspired spiking neural network (PN–KC–MBON) decodes odor patterns and was tested on external datasets. Conversations with a banana pathologist, analytical-lab and sensing-industry professionals, and educators shaped our validation targets, and positioned AeroSense as a fast, on-site screening layer that sends flagged samples to the lab rather than replacing it. Our survey, games, school camp, Teacher Toolkit, and Learning Lab bring the science of smell to the public. Wiki | Official Page
