Title: EPIONE: A nasal spray that asks the body to make its own painkiller Description: iGEM Patras 2026 presents...Epione, a gene delivery platform designed for the treatment of chronic cancer pain. Chronic cancer pain affects around half of people with cancer, while existing treatments are characterized by severe side effects. Our proposal? Enhancing enkephalins - the body's natural analgesics - and prolonging their half life, while engineering an isomorph with DOR preference, associated with less side effects. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, our dry lab and wet lab worked closely, the dry lab running simulations to calculate the best approach and the wet lab verifying on the bench. But Epione is not just a concept we kept behind closed doors; human practices was an integral part of our project. We visited schools and the elderly, organised public events, interviewed patients and scientists, and collaborated with multiple people in order to create our inclusive board game and the accessible spray device for the safe self-administration of Epione. Because, as a team, we believe in equal opportunities and access to information. After all, no one would benefit from a treatment they could not reach. Wiki | Official Page
