<description>Title: UNICO-Fuel：a sustainable approach to the in situ synthesis of Martian fuel Description: As humanity gradually moves towards exploring Mars and, ultimately, establishing settlements there, one fundamental challenge remains: energy.Transporting conventional fuels from Earth is prohibitively expensive and cannot sustain long-term missions. However, Mars possesses a resource that is often overlooked: carbon dioxide. Nearly 96 per cent of the Martian atmosphere consists of CO₂.So, can we convert this abundant resource into sustainable fuel? This question inspired our project—UNICO-Fuel. By combining photocatalytic technology, metabolic engineering, light-controlled CRISPRi systems and biosafety, we are providing an innovative and sustainable solution for the in-situ fuel supply of future Martian bases.
