<description>Title: MagniMO: An Attractive Solution for Pollution Description: 1,4-Dioxane is a cyclic ether that has been widely used as an industrial solvent and has become a persistent groundwater contaminant. It has been widely classified as a probable human carcinogen by major environmental and health agencies. Because of its highly stable chemical structure, removing this pollutant from the environment is a challenge. Our project focuses on the development of a microbial system capable of using atmospheric oxygen to break down this pollutant. To achieve this, we will express soluble di-iron monooxygenase (SDIMO) genes from Xanthobacter species in both Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida. We will also introduce magnetite biomineralisation genes to give the cells magnetic properties and enable their physical recovery from treated water after bioremediation is complete. By combining pollutant degradation with controlled microbial retrieval, our project seeks to provide an effective and sustainable approach for eliminating 1,4-dioxane from contaminated water environments.
