<description>Title: UPkeep: Sustainable Cosmetic Production via Upcycling of Ulva prolifera Description: Ulva prolifera blooms cause green tides, leaving biomass that can harm coastal environments when allowed to accumulate. This biomass also offers a source of valuable products. UPKeep aims to convert it into ulvan-derived oligosaccharides as potential cosmetic ingredients through a two-stage enzymatic process. First, a designer cellulosome uses a cellulose-binding module and configurable enzyme assembly to promote cooperative cell-wall degradation and release ulvan. An INPNC-displayed ulvan lyase then breaks down ulvan into oligosaccharides. Inspired by consolidated bio-saccharification (CBS), we plan to use biomass hydrolysates to support microbial growth and enzyme production, and recover cellulosomes with residual solids for reuse. Oligosaccharides were selected for potential solubility and bioavailability advantages. Stakeholder input helped shape the design. Ultimately, our project is expected to transform green tide "waste" into a sustainable resource, mitigating the ecological hazards while generating commercial revenues that can offset the financial losses caused by green tides.
