Commercial biodegradable alternatives exist (e.g., Vaisala RS41 BioCover), but at USD 120–250 per unit, large-scale adoption remains economically unfeasible for China's national meteorological network. BioSonde engineers Halomonas sp. LA5 to produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastic from waste PET-derived ethylene glycol (EG). The resulting PHA is formed into lightweight, marine-biodegradable radiosonde shells — a locally manufacturable, low-cost alternative designed for national-scale deployment.
