How long can a farmer’s saved seed really last, and what if it could last ten years? As part of our Human Practices work for iGEM 2026, Team REC-Chennai (Rajalakshmi Engineering College) met a farmer who grows native vegetables and saves his own seed. We talked about how long saved seed stays viable, the seasons that make seed saving hard, native vs hybrid varieties, and traditional storage methods. We also shared our project, THULIR: a protein-based approach to protect seeds from ice damage during cold storage, so native varieties can be kept for a decade or more. https://2026.igem.wiki/rec-chennai
