Professor Nielsen is an internationally recognized leader in biotechnology, serving as CEO of the BioInnovation Institute (a Novo Nordisk Foundation initiative), Professor at Chalmers University of Technology and Scientific Director at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at DTU. A globally respected researcher and entrepreneur, he has founded multiple biotech companies, trained more than 280 scientists in his research group, published more than 900 scientific articles with more than 140,000 citations, and holds more than 50 patents. Prof. Nielsen has received numerous scientific prizes, including the ENI Award, the Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister Prize for Transportation Fuels, the Novozymes Prize, and the Gold Medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He also serves on advisory boards and supports innovation ecosystems across Europe and the United States, and is a member of 13 academies, including NAS, NAE, NAM, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, EMBO and the Royal Swedish Academy of Science.
