<description>Title: HIDE - HLA Interference via Disguise and Erasure Description: An organ transplantation can save a life, but after the procedure, new problems arise: Transplanted organs get attacked because the immune system mistakes specific foreign proteins on the transplant's surface as a threat. To prevent this, patients currently need to take immunosuppressive medication for the rest of their lives, which weakens their entire immune system. This leaves them vulnerable to infections and other complications. Our project, HIDE, offers a new solution: instead of broadly suppressing the immune system, we are developing a system that locally downregulates these foreign proteins on the transplanted organ, making it less visible to the immune system. Our long-term goal is to improve transplant outcomes without the side effects of conventional immunosuppression. This will increase transplant longevity and improve the life quality of patients, which makes HIDE a better alternative to current treatments and the first step into a new era of transplant medicine.
