Rising temperatures and acidity create the perfect conditions for pathogenic bacteria like Vibrio coralliilyticus to destroy zooxanthellae, the algae corals need to survive. To combat this, DNHS-SanDiego-Ca iGEM has engineered Bacillus subtilis as a coral probiotic that competes with pathogens and produces phage-derived endolysins to eliminate the threat. From computational design to lab testing in realistic environmental conditions, we aim to support and improve coral reefs' natural defense systems.
