<description>Title: Stellacista: From Metabolic Wastes to Space Medicine Description: This year, NMU‑China presents a project on synthetic biology for long‑duration astronaut missions and future space colonization. Long‑duration deep‑space missions face two critical challenges: a persistent shortage of medical supplies due to the lack of regular resupply from Earth, and severe health risks from microgravity and cosmic radiation. To overcome this bottleneck, we developed an engineered cyanobacteria–Saccharomyces cerevisiae co‑culture system for in situ space biomanufacturing. Driven by photosynthesis, cyanobacteria continuously produce organic nutrients to sustain yeast growth. The engineered yeast, which can utilize urea as a nutrient source, produces three spaceflight‑essential flavonoids: kaempferol to counteract microgravity‑induced bone loss, quercetin to eliminate radiation‑damaged senescent cells, and apigenin to relieve space‑related insomnia and anxiety. We have also incorporated radiation‑resistance and microgravity‑adaptation modules to ensure stable, long‑term operation of the system under extreme extraterrestrial conditions. Ultimately, we aim to establish a self‑sufficient, intelligently controllable, and safe biopharmaceutical system that addresses the drug supply challenge of deep‑space missions and protects human health in future crewed space exploration.
