The 2026 iGEM team from RWTH Aachen, Adesonica, is developing a new approach against multiresistant bacteria. Our delivery system, which is based on the Tobacco Mosaic Virus, carries RNA into Gram-negative bacteria. Recombinant viral coat proteins are paired with cell-penetrating peptides to ensure penetration of the bacterial cell wall. Our virus-like particles assemble in vitro to encapsulate and release custom RNA cargo inside the cell. An open-source, modular bioreactor enables us to scale up production and adapt it to different applications. Meanwhile, our modelling team is focusing on DNA methylation, a critical time-dependent step in bacterial division. By linking methylome, transcriptome and growth data, our model will help researchers pinpoint methylation-based antibiotic targets.
