Title: ARAXNI: Making the World's Strongest Spider Silk Description: Plastic fibers are prevalent pollutants, harming organisms and entire ecosystems. This creates pressure on biomanufacturers to offer a functional, competitive and environmentally friendly solution. Spider silks are promising as they have recently gained increased attention due to their low density combined with strength and toughness. However, they are challenging and costly in production, and prone to environmental weathering. We therefore had two main goals for our project. Our primary goal was to produce truncated spider silk proteins that originate from Darwin's bark spider, which is known for making the strongest spider silk, in E. coli. Our secondary goal was to explore melanins as UV protective additives to our silk proteins. Our results indicate that the production of at least one silk construct was successful. We did not finish the engineering cycle for the project's UV portion but will continue to work towards it in the future. Wiki | Official Page
