Title: MagniMO: Engineering Magnetic Microbes for 1,4-Dioxane Bioremediation and Recoverable Synthetic Biology Solutions Description: MagniMO aims to address the persistent environmental challenge of 1,4-dioxane contamination in groundwater and wastewater through an innovative synthetic biology approach. 1,4-Dioxane is highly water-soluble, resistant to conventional treatment, and a potential human carcinogen. Our project investigates the use of a soluble di-iron monooxygenase (SDIMO) to support 1,4-dioxane degradation, alongside magnetite biomineralisation to enable magnetic cell recovery. By combining bioremediation with magnetic recovery, MagniMO explores a potential pathway towards more efficient and sustainable water treatment, with biocontainment and environmental safety central to future implementation. Beyond the laboratory, human practices shaped MagniMO through expert consultation, stakeholder engagement, and engineering design reviews. These practices guided the development of a safe and practical treatment approach. Our education and outreach programmes engaged diverse audiences through interactive workshops, school activities, university presentations, and community events. These initiatives made synthetic biology accessible while highlighting its potential to address environmental challenges and protect water resources. Wiki | Official Page
