Description: Most people believe that "cotton is naturally antistatic." The opposite is true: below 40% relative humidity, the surface resistance of cotton surges from 10⁹ Ω to over 10¹³ Ω, making it no different from synthetic fibers. Current solutions are either not wash-durable, uncomfortable, or too costly — none achieves the combination of being green, durable, and practical. The NENU-China 2026 team from Northeast Normal University provides the answer: CottonStatic — a bio-based antistatic treatment for cotton textiles built on synthetic biology. We engineered a CBM3a‑PaPilA fusion protein. Upon spraying, CBM3a anchors the protein onto the cotton fiber surface, while PaPilA self‑assembles into a conductive nanowire network, providing a charge dissipation pathway. Spray it on, let it dry, and the static hazard is eliminated. This protein‑nanowire network also offers a basic conductive scaffold for future flexible wearable electronics. We preserve cotton's inherent softness, maintain next‑to‑skin comfort, and avoid environmentally harmful chemical treatments.
