<description>Title: Bio Color ID: Engineering Biomaterials for Optical Authentication Description: Counterfeit products undermine consumer trust across industries, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. PSI Korea developed Bio Color ID to explore optical authentication using tags composed of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and biopigments. We engineered microbial PHB and indigo production pathways and investigated enzymatic halogenation to expand pigment diversity. We also fabricated PHB tags containing biopigments and measured their RGB responses under five LED illumination conditions and four background colors, generating 60 optical features. Responses varied with pigment composition, loading, and film thickness. Three independently fabricated tags with the same formulation showed consistent profiles. Selected comparisons between visually similar tags and with watercolor imitations on paper revealed differences under specific measurement conditions. Feedback from experts, the public, and industry informed calibration and packaging requirements. These findings connect synthetic biology, material design, and optical measurement, providing a foundation for validating authentication performance using independent samples and assessing future applications to product packaging across diverse industries.
