Title: DAHLIA - Making Food Safety Visible Description: Is your food safe to eat? Earlier this year, Finnish broadcasters exposed issues with the storage of meat and fish in supermarkets. The Aalto-Helsinki iGEM team presents DAHLIA, a test strip that detects the histamine emitted by foods like meat and fish as they spoil. In our biosensor, Diamine Oxidase (DAO) reacts with histamine, producing H2O2, and Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) reacts with H2O2 and changes the color of a substrate. DAO and HRP are each joined to a cellulose-binding module (CBM) to adhere to the cellulose-based test strip. Our team successfully designed, transformed and expressed both fusion proteins and developed assays for prototype testing. To ensure the positive impact of the product on our community, we interacted with consumers, food vendors, and experts from different fields. We especially strived to educate the community about food safety and histamine - for a future with less food waste and more food safety. Wiki | Official Page
