Title: MOSAIC: MOdular Scaffolds for Adhesive Implant Coatings Description: Medical implants can fail through infection, poor tissue integration and more, causing pain, lost independence and repeated treatment for patients. MOSAIC is a biomanufacturing platform powered by synthetic biology which can address these challenges through modular implant coatings made from elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs), engineered proteins inspired by human elastin. We produced and purified ELPs to assess coating performance: surface tests supported attachment, and cell assays showed improved adhesion, spreading and growth. A protease cut the ELP at built-in sites, a route to on-demand drug release, and an antimicrobial peptide inhibited bacterial infections. Our computational models predict how a coating will behave before it is made, while MOSAIC Designer simplifies repetitive gene design and assembly. Stakeholder engagement, production models and regulatory analyses informed a route to scalable biomanufacturing and commercialisation. Together, these advances provide building blocks for multifunctional, personalised implant coatings that could improve the lives of many patients. Wiki | Official Page
