<description>Title: Toward More Intelligent PET Recycling Description: Team NEBS-VCA combines AI-assisted protein engineering, experiments and molecular simulations to improve PET recycling. Our goal isn't just better PET-degrading enzymes: we want to understand why certain mutations make them better. EnzAdapt predicts melting temperature, optimal catalytic temperature and optimal pH from the amino acid sequence, while PRS-based mechanistic modelling explores the molecular basis of catalytic performance. In PET-film assays, Y87Q made about 4.9-fold more soluble products than FAST-PETase at 70 °C, and S187Y gave about 2.18-fold higher hydrolysis at 40 °C. We also share what recyclers, researchers, students and the public taught us, and how we plan to help material producers, recyclers and enzyme developers choose the right enzyme, operating conditions and material.
