        <description>Title: GlacierGuard: Engineering a biodegradable bacterial cellulose material for glacier protection Description: Glacier retreat is accelerating under global climate change, threatening ecosystems and water resources. Existing glacier-covering materials are mainly made from plastics or synthetic fibers, which may cause secondary pollution after long-term use. Our project aims to develop a biodegradable glacier-protection material based on bacterial cellulose (BC). Owing to its high water-retention capacity, BC can absorb and retain meltwater during the daytime. Under low nighttime temperatures, the retained water can refreeze, reducing net ice loss and helping preserve glacier mass. Produced by engineered microorganisms, BC is renewable, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. By utilizing the natural water-holding properties of bacterial cellulose, this project seeks to provide a sustainable bio-based strategy for mitigating glacier melting and protecting vulnerable glacier ecosystems.
