<description>Title: An Intelligent, Self-Floating Harvester for Heavy Metal Ions in Water Description: Our project has developed a synthetic biology-based “harvester” for collecting heavy metal ions from contaminated water. The system follows a four-step strategy—sensing, capturing, aggregating, and floating—using metal-responsive genetic circuits to activate ion-binding proteins, cell surface aggregation, and gas vesicle-driven buoyancy. Once a heavy metal is detected, engineered bacteria capture the ions, forming a lightweight microbial pad that rises to the surface for collection. We further integrated a auxotrophic safety chassis and designed an electrochemical recovery module to improve biosafety and enable the recovery of metals into reusable sediment. By integrating smart sensing, self-floating collection, and downstream metal recovery, our project provides a modular approach for the safer and more sustainable treatment of heavy metal-contaminated wastewater.
