Produced by several Bacillus species, γ-PGA is highly versatile thanks to its wide polydispersity. Despite a growing market, industrial production remains concentrated in Asia, raising concerns about availability, reliability, and environmental impact for North American manufacturers that depend on imports. iGEM UdeS aims to develop a sustainable, local production process for Canada. We selected Bacillus subtilis var. natto for its native γ-PGA biosynthesis, its safety profile, and its accessibility. Our strategy targets a single gene in the γ-PGA pathway, either overexpressing a promoter of production or knocking out a limiting one, to outproduce the wild type.
