Title: SHIHAB - Engineering biomanufacturing beyond Earth Description: What if astronauts could produce essential therapeutic proteins directly in space, reducing their dependence on pharmaceutical resupply from Earth? Meet SHIHAB: Synthetic Hosts for In-situ Healthcare and Autonomous Biomanufacturing, the KAUST iGEM 2026 project developed by 21 students representing more than 10 countries. Our team explored a new approach to on-demand biomanufacturing by engineering three microbial chassis: Bacillus subtilis, Pichia pastoris, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We demonstrated improved radiation resistance, produced and purified valuable proteins, and developed a compact, low-power bioreactor and purification system prototype. Through computational modeling, we also investigated mixing under reduced gravity, microbial metabolism, and alternative nutrient sources to support more resource-efficient production. Beyond the laboratory, we collaborated with experts, engaged communities through educational initiatives, and explored how this technology could eventually benefit remote and resource-limited environments on Earth. From Saudi Arabia to the stars, SHIHAB represents our first steps toward a future where biomanufacturing can go wherever humanity goes. Wiki | Official Page
