Current control methods often rely on chemical nematicides, many of which are expensive, environmentally harmful, or increasingly restricted. Our project aims to develop a sustainable biological alternative by engineering a beneficial nematophagous fungus to overproduce a naturally occurring volatile organic compound (VOC) that repels plant-parasitic nematodes. By enhancing the fungus's ability to release this airborne bioactive molecule, we seek to create an environmentally friendly strategy that protects crop roots, reduces nematode infestations, and supports more sustainable agricultural practices.
