First, enzyme encapsulation: a SpyCatcher-SpyTag covalent bond anchors the enzyme inside the BMC's lumen, shielding it from denaturing conditions. Second, click chemistry: a non-canonical amino acid incorporated into the shell enables a Nobel Prize-winning bioorthogonal reaction for encapsulating or displaying virtually any molecule of interest, a step toward a therapeutic delivery platform. Third, functional surfaces: one of the SpyTag-containing building blocks of the BMC polymerizes into a proteinaceous film that can be dried, rehydrated, and renewed by rinsing away its top layer, presented as a sustainable foundation for spatially organized enzyme cascades, antimicrobial surfaces, or engineered bioconsortia.
