Title: KisMet: Rewriting the Kismet of Metal Description: KisMet explores a synthetic-biology approach to recovering metal ions from waste-battery wastewater. We engineer a GRAS-classified Komagataeibacter rhaeticus strain to biosynthesize porous bacterial cellulose microbeads as stable biological carriers and secrete fusion proteins simultaneously. Metal-binding peptides are designed to anchor to the bead surfaces through carbohydrate-binding modules, enabling selective capture of target metal ions. By reducing reliance on corrosive chemicals and energy-intensive processing, KisMet aims to connect wastewater remediation with resource recovery. This project promotion video presents the environmental problem, our proposed biological mechanism, and our vision for a gentler and more sustainable metal cycle. Produced by SMS-Shenzhen for the 2026 iGEM Competition. Wiki | Official Page
