<description>This is a visualization of PhysiCell simulation, showing the first 5 days of treatment with wild-type (WT) engineered bacteria. The display is divided into three sections: Left: A 2D map of cell distribution. At the center is a circular tumor mass composed of a heterogeneous mixture of cells (tumor cells, stromal cells, and various immune cells). Two red diagonal lines represent blood vessels, through which Bifidobacterium longum (the engineered bacteria) enter the microenvironment. Top right: A plot showing the number of viable tumor cells. The count drops from 902 to approximately 620, stabilizes after about 30 hours. Bottom right: Heatmaps for IFN-γ and oxygen. IFN-γ, initially present at scattered points, gradually concentrates into two bright spots within the tumor center, reaching a peak value of approximately 0.8. Oxygen levels are lower in the tumor core and higher near the blood vessels, matching the pattern with the hypoxic microenvironment characteristic of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In summary, under the WT treatment, the tumor initially shrinks before reaching a plateau, while IFN-γ accumulates within the tumor mass. While the WT treatment demonstrates some efficacy in the early stages, its therapeutic impact appears to diminish over time.
