<description>Title: CLiPPR: Unlocking the Chloroplast’s Untapped Potential Description: We are in the middle of the biotech revolution. But most bioreactors still depend on heterotrophic organisms. So what would it take to make this more sustainable, more cost-efficient and easier? Nature has been running sustainable production for billions of years. Using nothing but sunlight, CO₂ and water, plants build around 90% of Earth's new biomass through photosynthesis. A plant that produces large amounts of recombinant protein pays for it. The foreign protein takes over the plant's own production capacity. It’s stressed and cannot grow unbothered. Weak plants mean less biomass, and less biomass means a lower yield. Growth and production compete. And inside every plant cell, one organelle does most of the work: the chloroplast. In microbes, this problem was solved long ago. Inducible expression systems let researchers grow their cells first, THEN switch production on. In the chloroplast, this is still a challenge. Existing approaches are limited, inefficient or inflexible. That’s what the iGEM team Marburg is working on with CLiPPR (Chloroplast Library for Inducible PPRs). We're developing a system that lets us dynamically control gene expression in plant chloroplasts using natures own solution: PPR proteins - so we can decide exactly when a protein is produced and how much.
