Title: We Designed a Protein With AI to Catch Bacteria Red-Handed Description: Bacteria are everywhere: on your hands, in your gut, in the food you eat. Sometimes they're exactly why you're not feeling right. But figuring out which bacteria you're actually dealing with usually means sending a sample to a lab and waiting days for an answer that isn't cheap either. Team UBrawijaya team wants to flip that around. Usually, in detecting specific bacteria, scientist target a specific bacterium's surface protein. Normally, they build massive antibody or nanobody libraries and screening thousands of candidates one by one, sometimes even immunizing animals just to land on a single working match. We skipped all of that. Using AI, we designed a protein completely from scratch: a nanobody precise enough to lock onto one specific target bacterium and never let go, no library, no animals, no months of guesswork. We then dressed our own E. coli up to wear it, turning them into living detectors. When our engineered E. coli meets its target, the two bacteria grab onto each other and clump together into a visible huddle you can literally see with your own eyes, no expensive machines, no lab wait, no complicated readout to interpret. It's a lab test shrunk down into a simple reaction you can watch happen: point-of-care, low-cost, and fast enough to get an answer on the spot, not in a week. Join UBrawijaya team as we turn AI-designed proteins into bacteria's worst nightmare, and your fastest path to an answer! Wiki | Official Page
