The machines leave, the news cycle moves on — but the heavy metals left behind in the tailings don't. They leach into soil and groundwater for decades, quietly keeping displaced communities from ever safely returning home. Team Sanjeevani is engineering Physcomitrium patens (moss) to change that story. By introducing specialized metal transporters, we're enhancing the plant's natural ability to draw heavy metals and rare earth elements out of contaminated soil — paired with engineered intracellular sequestration so the moss can safely store what it absorbs. Named after the mythical herb that brings the dead back to life, Sanjeevani is our attempt to do the same for land that mining left behind.
