<description>Title: ReefBond: A Bifunctional Bioinspired Adhesive for Coral Reef Restoration Description: Secure attachment of coral fragments to the reef substrate remains a critical bottleneck in coral reef restoration. Conventional fixation strategies—cement, epoxy resins, and mechanical fasteners—face substantial limitations in underwater settings, including poor handling, long curing times, and the release of non-biodegradable materials into the marine environment. Inspired by mussel adhesion, the ReefBond project has designed and expressed a bifunctional fusion protein comprising mussel adhesive protein domains coupled to a mineralization-inducing peptide. Preliminary characterization demonstrates strong underwater adhesion and mineralization-promoting activity. Ongoing and future work will assess its adhesion performance and stability under marine conditions, its biodegradation profile, and its biocompatibility with coral tissue and other reef-associated organisms. By offering a biodegradable, bio-derived alternative to synthetic adhesives, ReefBond aims to provide a safer and more sustainable tool for coral outplanting and reef restoration, contributing to the protection of marine ecosystems.
