<description>Title: AEI Prep - synPETic - PET repolymerization in space Description: synPETic is an enzymatic approach to recycling PET plastic waste for long-duration spaceflight. Astronauts on the International Space Station generate about 2,500 kilograms of solid waste per year, and resupplying missions is costly. Industrial PET recycling needs high temperatures, heavy equipment, and metal catalysts that spacecraft cannot support. We engineered E. coli to produce three proteins that assemble into a scaffold-based enzyme system, the PETosome, which breaks PET down at 37–50 °C. This video covers our design, wet lab results, a repolymerization attempt that did not yet succeed, our human practices, and the business plan for space sustainability.
