<description>Title: VOYAGE - Programmable Gas Vesicles for Acoustic Observation and Organization Description: We present VOYAGE, a modular platform that enables gas vesicles to become a programmable interface between ultrasound and synthetic biology. These genetically encoded protein nanostructures scatter acoustic waves and collapse at defined pressures, enabling their use for measuring and manipulating cells. We engineered gas vesicle variants for multiplexed in vivo imaging and coupled enzyme activity and the presence of soluble biomarkers to acoustic signals. Beyond observation, our toolbox enables precise spatial organization, and sorting of distinct cell types. Our computational model, ATLAS, built alongside experimental data, unites simulation, generative protein design, and deep-learning image analysis into a framework. Inside and outside the lab, our Fail Forward initiative builds an open culture around setbacks in science through education and by addressing challenges at both individual and systemic levels. Uniting our toolbox, computational modeling, and a culture of learning from failure, VOYAGE transforms how we explore, understand, and engineer biology using acoustics.
