        <description>Title: Ethanol from Paper Waste: Enzymatic Breakdown of Plastic-Coated Containers for High-Efficiency Microbial Bioethanol Conversion Description: Paper containers with tightly bound plastic coatings represent a huge recycling challenge in Taiwan. Because these composite materials are very difficult to separate, they are primarily sent to incinerators or landfills, leading to high carbon emissions and resource waste. We are developing a synthetic biology solution to convert the paper waste into renewable energy. We are engineering E. coli to produce recombinant cellulase and beta-glucosidase enzymes to effectively break down the cellulose of the paper matrix into glucose. The resulting glucose is then submitted to Zymomonas mobilis, a bacterium that can efficiently convert sugars into bioethanol. Tackling the climate crisis by enzymatic recycling with plausible biomanufacturing, our project turns an environmental pollutant into a sustainable source of biofuel. Official Page</description>
