Title: iGEM_NYU_Presentation_Video Description: Our project aims to solve the escalating issue of plastic pollution. As of currently, the amount of plastic that pollutes cities, oceans, and environments is exponential but the efforts put into reducing the amount of plastic on our earth is minimal. Current conventional means of recycling and degrading plastic are inefficient as they take years for only a small percentage of the plastic to be degraded. Our goal is to degrade the most common type of plastic, PET. In naturally occurring I. Sakainesis bacteria, there exists enzymes, PETase and MHETase, that degrade PET thoroughly and much more efficiently than conventional ways (mechanical and chemical). By creating an optimal environment via a tabletop bioreactor, we can control the conditions where our I. Sakainesis can degrade PET at its optimal rate. Wiki | Official Page
