<description>Title: Ethanol from Paper Waste: One-Pot Enzymatic Saccharification and Microbial Fermentation of Plastic-Coated Containers Description: Electricity is scarce on the island of Taiwan, yet every school day at Mingdao High School more than 7,000 students throw away paper lunch boxes, coffee cups and ramen bowls whose plastic lining is bonded so tightly to the paper that no ordinary mill can take them back. Most end up in incinerators or landfills — and the energy locked inside them goes up with them. Instead of tearing the plastic off, we unlock the glucose from the cellulose inside the paper. We put shredded containers, a cellulase, a β-glucosidase and Zymomonas mobilis into a single vessel: the enzymes release glucose from the paper, and the bacterium ferments it into ethanol in a one-pot design — simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). We characterized both enzymes under fermentation-compatible conditions — far from their optimum — modeled the coupling between enzyme and microbe, and built a benchtop fermentor.
