Colorectal cancer is among the most preventable cancers there is, and still among the deadliest — not because we lack a test, but because the test that works is invasive, expensive, and easy to postpone. And even the people who do get screened can have lesions missed. Those are the two problems we chose: getting people screened in the first place, and making sure the screening they get is complete. The video walks through both halves of our answer. On the wet lab side, we designed a plasmid that turns E. coli into a living detector for a colorectal cancer marker found in urine — the cells fluoresce when they find it. On the dry lab side, we built a reader that replaces a laboratory fluorimeter with a blue LED and a phone camera, and ColoRisk, a model that reviews recorded colonoscopy footage and compiles it into a single deduplicated report. Our aim is a screening pathway cheap enough to reach the people who are never getting a colonoscopy at all.
