<description>Title: MlrAcle on the Charles Description: Algal blooms in the Charles River are a significant environmental and public health issue within the Greater Boston area. Overgrowth of cyanobacteria can lead to the production and release of algal toxins such as microcystins, which can cause liver damage in humans. We aim to reduce microcystin levels by engineering bacteria to produce encapsulins, self-assembling protein compartments designed to carry a bacterial enzyme called MlrA to degrade microcystins. By packaging the MlrA inside the encapsulins for protection from natural proteases, this system is intended to allow for the long-term elimination of microcystins during bloom conditions, providing a targeted strategy to reduce toxin levels and improve the safety of the Charles River for the surrounding communities and ecosystems.
